VVS1. VVS2. VS1. VS2. These grades sound technical, but the practical question is simple: which one is actually visible to the naked eye? The answer determines whether you're spending money on real quality or on documentation nobody will ever look at.
How the Clarity Scale Works
Clarity grades measure the presence and visibility of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface characteristics) in a diamond. The GIA scale runs from Flawless (FL) at the top through Internally Flawless (IF), VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, and into the Included grades (I1, I2, I3).
The most important fact about this scale: all grades from Flawless through VS2 are eye-clean. You cannot see the inclusions with the naked eye. The difference between a VVS1 and a VS2 stone in normal wearing conditions is zero — visible to both wearer and observer. The difference exists only under 10× magnification in a controlled examination environment.
VVS — Very Very Slightly Included

VVS inclusions are so small they are extremely difficult to find even under 10× magnification. A trained gemologist examining a VVS1 stone must search carefully — the inclusions may be pinpoints, needles, or growth lines that require precise focus to locate. VVS2 inclusions are similarly minute but slightly easier to find under magnification.
In any real-world condition — daylight, indoor lighting, on a person's finger or earlobe — a VVS diamond looks completely clean. There is no practical difference between VVS and Flawless in appearance. The distinction is documented grade, not visible quality.
Who should buy VVS: People who want the highest-documented clarity grade, collectors, or buyers for whom the certificate itself is part of the value. At StudsDirect, we sell exclusively VVS+ because our direct sourcing from SEEPZ allows us to specify it at the crystal stage — and at current lab-grown prices, the cost premium over VS is minimal enough that there's no reason to accept less.
VS — Very Slightly Included
VS inclusions are minor but somewhat easier to locate under 10× magnification than VVS. VS1 inclusions require careful examination; VS2 inclusions are visible under magnification but still require a loupe or microscope. Both are universally eye-clean in any realistic viewing condition.
Who should buy VS: Budget-conscious buyers who want a certified high clarity grade without VVS documentation. The actual appearance is indistinguishable from VVS. The savings can be redirected to cut grade or carat weight.
The caveat: at 2ct and above in lab-grown diamonds, VS2 stones from commodity sources can sometimes have inclusions that are difficult enough to find under magnification that a less careful grader might round up. Buying from a source with direct manufacturer relationships reduces this risk significantly. VVS+ specifications from the crystal stage don't have this problem.
SI — Slightly Included
SI1 inclusions are noticeable under 10× magnification. Many SI1 stones are still eye-clean — the inclusions are real but not visible without a loupe. SI2 is where the risk starts: some SI2 stones have inclusions visible to the naked eye, particularly when the inclusion is near the center table of the stone.
SI grades were an acceptable choice in mined diamonds when VVS carried a substantial price premium. In the lab-grown market, where production costs have compressed the price gap between clarity tiers, accepting SI for savings makes less sense than it did five years ago. The clarity premium you're avoiding has shrunk. The clarity gap you're accepting has not.
The Price Difference at Lab-Grown Prices
| Grade | Visibility (naked eye) | Visibility (10× loupe) | Relative Price (1ct round) |
|---|---|---|---|
| VVS1 | Invisible | Extremely difficult to find | +15–25% vs VS1 |
| VVS2 | Invisible | Very difficult to find | +10–18% vs VS1 |
| VS1 | Invisible | Difficult to find | Baseline |
| VS2 | Invisible | Somewhat easy to find | −5–10% vs VS1 |
| SI1 | Usually invisible | Noticeable | −15–25% vs VS1 |
At 2ct lab-grown, the VVS2 premium over VS1 is roughly $200–$400 on a $1,000–$1,500 stone. That's a real number, but for a piece you'll wear for decades, buying documented quality makes sense — especially when you can verify it independently through IGI's online portal.
Cut Grade Outranks Clarity Every Time
If you're choosing between upgrading from VS1 to VVS2, or upgrading from Very Good cut to Excellent cut — choose the cut. Every time. Cut determines how much light the stone returns and where it goes. A well-cut VS1 stone will visually outperform a poorly-cut VVS1 stone in any lighting condition. Fire, brilliance, and scintillation all come from cut precision, not clarity grade.
Don't accept a Good or Very Good cut to afford a higher clarity grade. The cut is what people see. The clarity grade is what the certificate says.
The Practical Recommendation
For most buyers: VVS2 or VS1 is the rational choice. Both are eye-clean. VS1 saves money that can go to a better cut or more carat weight. VVS2 buys documented top-tier clarity at a modest premium. The question is whether the documentation matters to you beyond the stone itself.
If you want to see the actual difference: request to see stones side by side under magnification at a local jeweler. Bring both grading reports. Look at both stones. Then look at them without the loupe. The loupe view is the certificate. The naked-eye view is the reality.
